Social History

EARLY PERIOD

Land Ownership & Feudal Era

In earlier times, the majority of the land in the Panchayat belonged to the Puliyara Kovilakam and Nilambur Kovilakam, branch lineages of the Kozhikode Zamorin family, along with various local temple trusts known as Devaswams.

1921

Khilafat Movement & Malabar Rebellion

The 1921 Malabar Rebellion and Khilafat Movement against British rule had a significant and mixed cultural impact across the region.

1970

Agriculture & Land Reforms

Historically, short-term crops such as paddy, banana and cassava (tapioca) were widely cultivated. The implementation of the Land Reforms Act in 1970 contributed to a shift in agricultural practices towards long-term crops.

TRADITIONAL ECONOMY

Livestock Farming

Extensive grazing pastures and natural water bodies once supported rich livestock farming in the area. These activities declined over time as grazing facilities and natural water resources gradually diminished.

INDEPENDENCE ERA

Political Developments

Organized political movements developed around the period of Indian independence, with participation from the Congress, Muslim League and Communist movements. Local figures such as Kampuravan Mammadaji were arrested during the 1948 Hyderabad Action.

The primary Manjeri–Areacode PWD road underwent tar surfacing during this period, improving regional connectivity.

1978

Widespread Electrification

Widespread electrification was introduced across the Panchayat, marking an important stage in the region's infrastructure development.

1983

Kavanur Veterinary Hospital

The Kavanur Veterinary Hospital was established, strengthening veterinary and livestock-related public services.

Temples

The Panchayat is home to ancient places of worship including the Elayoor Vishnu Temple, Kavanur Shiva-Vishnu Temple and Subramanya Temple.

Mosques

The first mosque was established at Kavanur Tavaraparamba more than 100 years ago. Today, seven mosques function as traditional religious education centres known as Dars.

📚 Literacy & Education

Traditional Othu Pallikoodams and Kudi Pallikoodams formed an early foundation for education and cultural learning.

Adult education and literacy classes were actively conducted under the leadership of KANFED.

Chelakkodan Aysha, a learner from Kavanur Panchayat, was selected to make the formal declaration when Kerala achieved 100% Total Literacy.
